The Grenada Sports & Wellbeing Foundation’s Under-13 five -a- side football tournament, which took place at the Lauriston Stadium in Carriacou last weekend July 15/16 was a resounding success, with first timers Tobago Player Development Project emerging as eventual winners.
In this fourth edition of the competition, which began in 2018,teams from Carriacou, Grenada, Union Island, St Vincent and Tobago overcame travel and weather challenges in an impressive display of technical skills, creative thinking, physicality and teamwork which bodes well for football development in the Eastern Caribbean.
In the rain-blasted group stage on Saturday Tobago registered emphatic wins of 14-0 and 7-0, while St Vincent’s System 2 chalked up an 11-0 victory. In Sunday’s knock-out stage local Kyak teams Hillsborough Government School, Harvey Vale and L’Esterre all played close quarter final matches, with Hillsborough advancing to the semis, where they narrowly succumbed 2-1 to the strong St Vincent System 3 side. The other semi-final between Tobago and St Vincent’s System 2, was the thriller match of the tournament, with Tobago just edging through after a penalty shootout. Tobago continued their winning streak in the final, overcoming the spirited St Vincent’s System 3, 3-0 to emerge deserving tournament champs, with Kyen Anderson nominated MVP.
